DESCRIPTION:Come and hear Dr. Laura (Kai) Burrus from San Francisco State U
niversity (SFSU) talk about current research on climate change\, its impac
ts\, and practical solutions. Dr. Burrus is currently transitioning her re
search from understanding the biochemical and cellular mechanisms underlyi
ng Wnt gradient formation in chick embryos to analyzing the role of microb
es in climate change resilience. This transition is motivated by her love
of the outdoors along with the recognition that climate change is inherent
ly racist. In the words of Hop Hopkins\, "You can't have climate change wi
thout sacrifice zones\, and you can't have sacrifice zones without disposa
ble people\, and you can't have disposable people without racism." To this
end\, Dr. Burrus helped to envision and launch the new Certificate in Cli
mate Change: Causes\, Impacts\, and Solutions and is a Co-Director of the
Climate Justice Leaders Initiative. She is also engaged in pedagogical inn
ovation and is pioneering new approaches to effectively communicate resear
ch to scientific and lay communities. As one of five LGBTQIA biology facul
ty in the Department of Biology at SFSU\, she brings unique perspectives a
nd recently collaborated on research exploring how the language used by bi
ology faculty in classrooms may influence feelings of inclusivity. Dr. Bur
rus is also a member of the Rotary Club of San Francisco. She holds a Bach
elor of Science in Chemistry from the College of William and Mary\, a Ph.D
. in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin at Madison\, and a Post
