The exhibition is a meditation on how Bla ck American communities conjure wells of creativity and resistance that ca rve out places to hold their histories and futures\, in spite of ongoing s ystemic oppression. It invites reflection on the intersection of activism\ , memory\, and the materiality of home by navigating the braided histories of displacement\, resistance\, and resilience within Black American commu nities in Oakland and the East Bay\, exploring how these communities have creatively resisted dispossession and reimagined spaces of home and belong ing. Our visit includes a curator-led tour\, some time to view and contemp late this intriguing exhibition\, and a discussion over lunch from the mus eum’s excellent Town Fare Café. We’ll be joined by Johwell Saint-Cili en\, immediate past president of the Rotary Club for Global Action and Vid eo Producer at the museum. Johwell created video content for this exhibiti on. After lunch\, those who wish to remain can view other parts of the mus eum\, including Good Fire: Tending Native Lands\, an exhibition that ex plores how Native communities in Northern California have used controlled fire – also called “good fire” or “cultural burning” – to care for the land and sustain traditions for millennia.
