DESCRIPTION:Gender is undergoing a sea change across cultures. No longer is
the binary gender system bedrock\; instead\, gender has become about movi
ng boulders. We are challenged to un-learn everything we think we know abo
ut gender and to replace old tropes with new paradigms that make room for
infinite variations. Dr. Ehrensaft will share what she has learned from he
r work with children and families at the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital
Child and Adolescent Gender clinic. She’ll open up a dialogue with us ab
out the gender affirmative model\, which recognizes the complex interplay
of nature\, nurture\, and culture that go into any one person's gender dev
elopment. Diane Ehrensaft\, Ph.D. is a developmental and clinical psycholo
gist and associate professor of Pediatrics at UCSF. She is Director of Men
tal Health of the Child and Adolescent Gender and chief psychologist at th
eir gender clinic housed at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in the Depart
