DESCRIPTION:Marc Johnson\, a member of the San Francisco Beekeepers Associa
tion\, will provide an introduction to honey bees\, talk about the benefit
s of having bees all around us\, dispel some common myths about beekeeping
that cause anxiety among city dwellers\, and answer questions about how b
ees and humans can co-exist in the City. Marc has been keeping bees for ab
out eight years\, is part of the swarm catching team in the City\, and tea
ches bee classes at Garden for the Environment. He will share his experien
ces on what it takes to be a beekeeper in an urban area and even offer som
e practical information about honey. When most people think of bee colonie
s\, they think of farms\, rural areas\, and an abundance of space and plan
ts for bees to gather food. However\, with the latest trend in beekeeping\
, we see increasing numbers of both beekeepers and green spaces in cities
and suburbs. According to a French study\, bees in urban settings are more
productive and healthier compared to their rural counterparts since they
enjoy the higher temperatures\, have a wider variety of plant life\, and a
void effects of pesticides\, which are commonly used to control pests from
farming crops. This speaker is part of our series of speakers on San Fra
ncisco Still Knows How . This is a regular membership meeting of The Rotar
y Club of San Francisco\, open to all Rotarians\, visiting Rotarians\, pro
spective members\, and guests. Meeting Schedule: 12:00 Noon Registration
