Our club has long been giving free dictionaries to third graders in San Francisco to assist them in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners. These weighty, hard-bound dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn, and so we want to help EVERY student in third grade classrooms have the tools they need to succeed.

In order to make sure the students get the most our of their dictionaries, a couple of Rotarians visit individual third grade classrooms to deliver the books and spend a little time in the classroom teaching the students how to use them.  For many children, this new dictionary is the first book they ever own. It doesn't take long to make a big difference in the lives of these third graders. And going into the schools to hand out dictionaries is one of the most fun and satisfying things we do.

There are several ways you can help:

  • We'd love to give more dictionaries to more students in more schools.

If you know a teacher or administrator in a San Francisco elementary school, check with Mark Calender to see whether that school is on our list. If not, work with Mark to get in touch and see if they'd like us to bring dictionaries to them.

  • Volunteer to go into one or more classrooms to deliver dictionaries/ Assignments will be made as school visits are scheduled in the coming weeks. Note: all deliveries occur during the school day.

Use the buttons in the upper left hand corner to register your interest in volunteering.

  • Make a donation to Rotary Service for the cost of one or more dictionaries.
