Darin Jensen will talk about working collaboratively with the public and scholars alike to create a collection of maps that explore the theme of water—from the lore of water monsters to the stresses on the Nile River to support 200 million people in Africa, from the coincidences of shrines and industrial polluters along the Ganges in India to the dangers of fracking around the San Francisco Bay.
He will also share ways that you can get involved with Guerrilla Cartography’s mission to widely promote the cartographic arts and facilitate an expansion of the art, methods, and thematic scope of cartography, through collaborative projects.
Darin Jensen has been a cartographer for seventeen years. For most of that time he taught at UC Berkeley, teaching cartography as a graphic, narrative device. He is one who practices as well as teaches; his maps are published in more than fifty books. In recent years, he has edited two atlases: Mission Possible: A Neighborhood Atlas, a project of experiential learning with his students, and Food: An Atlas,.a crowd-sourced, crowd-funded project that inspired the creation of Guerrilla Cartography, the nonprofit that Jensen now leads.
Currently, Jensen works as a data visualization analyst for the division of Institutional Research & Academic Planning at the University of California, Office of the President. There he continues to make maps for such documents as the UC Accountability Report as well as managing UC in CA: An interactive map of impact beyond campus borders.
