Many of us think of scrapbooks, crochet, and popsicle sticks when we hear the word “craft”. The Museum of Craft and Design (MCD) thinks of something else: a vibrant international art scene where skilled artisans work with glass, fiber, metal, jewelry, furniture, wood, clay, and other media. Located in San Francisco’s Dogpatch neighborhood (in the same building as Alliance for Smiles), MCD was named 2015’s “boutique museum of the year” by San Francisco Magazine.
Renay Conlin, MCD’s Development Director, will give us a brief history of the craft and design movement and introduce us to the ways in which the museum explores how this movement impacts our dynamically changing global culture.
Renay, originally trained as an opera singer, has served as Artistic and General Manager of Toledo Opera, President & CEO of the Napa Valley Museum, and Director of Development at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (the de Young and the Legion of Honor).
