This is a call for Rotarians to work with the students in the Salvation Army Culinary Academy at the Central Kitchen to prepare food and box lunches for the Bike Build. Each day requires a three-hour shift and up to six volunteers. 

~ April 24, 2025:  Shift is from 9 AM to 12 noon.

~ April 25, 2025:  Shift is from 9 AM to 12 noon.

When you register to take a shift, please indicate the day or days when you can help.

We'll be assembling 150 brand new bikes for distribution to kids in Kindergarten through 4th grade in the Bayview Area of San Francisco. This Bike Build is a partnership among the Rotary Club of San Francisco, the Bayview Hunters Point YMCA, YBike, Gay For Good, the San Francisco Sheriff's Department, and 1-800-GOT-JUNK?.  

We'll begin building the bikes at 8 AM in the YMCA gymnasium so that we can have them ready for the families when they arrive at 1 PM. We plan to distribute outside in the YMCA parking lot off of Quesada Avenue. The children and their families will be able to choose their bike as well as receive a free helmet and bike lock. We will also have an area for the children to ride and learn bike safety. 

Breakfast and lunch will be provided to volunteers. Volunteers will be expected to help with clean-up at the end of the event. Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors, partner organizations, friends, and family are all welcome. Rotarians: Please wear Rotary-themed gear. Everyone: Long pants and closed-toe shoes are recommended for the bike assembly portion.

Instructions: You may sign up for the entire day or just the bike assembly from 8 AM-12 noon or the bike distribution and clean-up from 11:30 AM-3:30 PM.

As an early kickoff to San Francisco Pride, our May DEI Film Festival movie is Will & Harper. This powerful documentary follows actor Will Ferrell and writer Harper Steele on a 17-day road trip across the United States shortly after Harper’s gender transition. As the two longtime friends journey together, the film explores themes of identity, friendship, and acceptance with both humor and emotional depth. Through heartfelt conversations and moments of reflection, Will & Harper offers an honest and moving portrayal of navigating life and connection through personal transformation. Please note that the film is rated R for language.

Following the screening, we are honored to welcome Dr. Lin Fraser, Ed.D., a licensed psychotherapist in private practice in San Francisco, for a post-film discussion. Dr. Fraser is a founding professional member and Past President of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), and she brings deep expertise and insight into gender identity, mental health, and the importance of supportive communities. As a clinician, she has worked with transgender clients for the past 45 years, primarily doing long-term therapy. She has given talks nationally and internationally since the 1980’s and published extensively on trans mental health and interdisciplinary care. Dr. Fraser has served as a consultant for the Gender Institute at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital, now UCSF Health / Saint Francis Hospital Gender Institute, since its inception in 2016.

Scott Plakun, past President of our Club, will speak to us about why Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) is of crucial importance to the future of Rotary. Scott, who was proud to serve as our Club’s first Vice President of DEI, is now the Chair of DEI for our Rotary District 5150.

He will give an overview of what Rotary International and District 5150 are doing about DEI. He’ll also share his observations about how our Club has benefitted from our DEI leadership in the Rotary world since he and the late John Mathers (also a past President of our Club) founded an ad-hoc DEI committee in 2020.

Finally, Scott will lead a discussion about how our Club’s focus on DEI has transformed the Club and what we can do to attract more diverse members.

Scott has been a member of the Rotary Club of San Francisco since 1992 and served as our 2009-10 Club President. He has been engaged in DEI since his high school years in New York City when the older school he attended was 85% Black, while the brand-new high school – less than two miles away – was almost entirely white.

Now retired, Scott has been Head of Technology at a major investment management firm and Director of Technology and Innovation at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (de Young and Legion of Honor).

Scott lives in Marin with his life partner and husband of more than 35 years. They enjoy world travel, opera, symphony, theater, fine dining (and fine cooking), and collecting contemporary art.

Inika Mehra joins us to speak about stress management and how unresolved emotions can manifest in our lives — impacting physical health, mental well-being, professional growth, and interpersonal relationships. She is the 2025 Miss San Francisco and the founder of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) Alliance — a nonprofit advancing education, equity, and integrative care for women with PCOS. 

After personally navigating acute PCOS herself, Inika became certified in Ayurvedic principles and Energy Kinesiology, combining these tools with meditation and nervous system regulation to support holistic healing. 

A graduate of the University of California, Irvine, Inika was named a global finalist in the Women Changing the World Awards, where she received an honorable mention for her leadership in women’s health. She was also selected as a Holistic Youth Scholar for her contributions to integrative wellness.

Rotarians are invited to attend in-person baby showers at the Homeless Prenatal Program (HPP)! We will distribute the diaper bags full of items that Rotarians recently assembled. There will be one shower in Spanish limited to two Rotarians and one shower in English limited to two Rotarians. You do not need to know Spanish to attend the Spanish shower. Translation will be available.

~Times for Spanish Shower:  Arrive at 9:30 AM; shower is from 10-12 noon.

Come and help the team from the Rotary Club of San Francisco build grocery boxes, sort donations, and perform other various tasks for our longtime partner – the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank. In 2024, our work provided enough food for 4,073 meals for children, families, and seniors on just one volunteer day. As food insecurity continues to be a challenge, let's meet or exceed that this time around! Orientation and training are included in each shift. Please arrive at least 5 minutes before 9 AM for check-in. There is usually plenty of street parking around the warehouse but Uber/Lyft/public transportation are options as well.

GUIDELINES

• All volunteers MUST be at least 8+ years old. Minors must be accompanied by an adult.
• Only volunteer if you are healthy and completely comfortable serving. 
• Closed-toe shoes are required for all volunteers. 
• Volunteers should not wear jewelry. If worn, all items must be covered by the provided gloves and/or hairnets. 
• We suggest dressing in casual and clean layers, as the temperature in the warehouse is often cool.

• Registration is limited to 9 volunteers. So, please register early.
