Our Club held its 16th Annual Bike Build on Saturday, April 18, when we built and distributed 130 brand new bikes with our fantastic partners! This year, we “switched gears” to purchasing Retrospec bikes, a higher quality bicycle than we have bought in the past. We are hopeful that these bikes will last longer and will be passed to other kids in the future.

Here is a list of our partners and how they contributed:
  • YBike: provided technical expertise to build the bikes and provided quality control for safety. They also contributed bike helmets for all bike recipients.
  • Bayview YMCA: provided the venue for the Bike Build, along with the organization of families to receive the bikes. The Y also held a Healthy Kids Day Fair in conjunction with the Bike Build.
  • Gay4Good: provided dozens of volunteers to build bikes, along with snacks for the event.
  • San Francisco Sheriff’s Department: provided security for the event.
  • Rotary Club of San Francisco Bayview: provided volunteers.
  • San Francisco State University Climate Headquarters: provided volunteers.
  • San Francisco Bicycle Coalition: provided a “Free from Training Wheels” course to help kids learn to ride.
  • 1-800-Got-Junk: provided recycling services for the bike boxes.
We received excellent feedback from the recipients of the bikes. They were very pleased with the quality and enjoyed trying out their new bikes. Many thanks to all Rotarians and partners who pitched in with this effort. The teamwork was fantastic!!!
