On Tuesday, February 20, 2024, the Rotary Club of San Francisco proudly hosted a vibrant Lunar New Year event at the Hong Kong Lounge, embracing the spirit of renewal, prosperity, and unity that this auspicious occasion represents. Amidst colorful decorations and the aroma of traditional delicacies, our members and guests were treated to an enchanting lion dance performance and a mesmerizing guzheng musical instrument.

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the energetic lion dance performance by the San Francisco Jing Mo Athletic Association lion dance troupe, which captivated the audience with their graceful movements, synchronized choreography, and vibrant costumes. The lion, symbolizing good luck and fortune, danced its way through the venue, spreading joy and auspicious blessings to all present. Their lively performance set the tone for a festive atmosphere filled with excitement and anticipation.

Melody YanComplementing the dynamic lion dance performance were soul-stirring musical performances by Melody Yan on the guzheng. Melody is an award-winning guzheng musician and the first guzheng musician to appear on American TV and perform for several prestigious events around the world. She transported our guests on a musical journey through the rich cultural heritage of China. The melodic tunes of the guzheng, a traditional Chinese zither, resonated with elegance and depth, captivating listeners, and evoking a sense of serenity and harmony.

This special evening included a scrumptious 10-course banquet, accompanied with overflowing wine, cultural performances, fellowship, and goodwill. The silent wine auction including six bottles from a private wine collection and the raffle of $100 Amazon gift cards and one-of-a-kind lithographs donated by Vanita Louie were a big hit among the attendees.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Lunar New Year Celebration Committee: Paul Yep, Wendy Shew, Hana Wang, Christopher Wiseman, Paul Vazquez, Bob Hermann, and Mary Liu who served as Chair. A big thank you also to our volunteers: Anita Stangl, Maureen O’Shea, Lauren Neumann, and James Wong. Additional thank you to our table sponsors: District Governor Laine Hendricks, Vanita Louie, Bob Hermann and Dan Joraanstad, Mary Liu, and the members of the Rotary Club of San Francisco Chinatown Club.

Our celebration was enriched by the presence of Miss Chinatown USA 2023 - Ashlyn Tsui, and other esteemed guests including visiting Rotarians, leaders from Rotary District 5150, and community leaders. Together, they joined us in commemorating the traditions and customs of the Lunar New Year. Their participation underscored the importance of cultural diversity and intercultural understanding in fostering a more inclusive and harmonious society.
