The District 5150 Conference on May 15-18, 2025 in downtown Santa Rosa was a true celebration of Hope in Action (this year's District theme). The event brought together Rotarians from across the region to share stories of resilience, innovation, and community impact. Led by our skilled District Governor Steve Wright, the Conference highlighted the enduring spirit of Rotary and the power of collective effort. Attendees enjoyed beautiful weather and had opportunities to visit the Charles Schulz Museum and other attractions.

Club Awards and Recognitions
The Rotary Club of San Francisco proudly received six Club Excellence Awards for outstanding achievement in the following: Membership, Community Service, International Service, Youth Service, Public Image, and Vocational Service. This remarkable achievement reflects our Club's strong leadership and unwavering commitment to service and community.

Celebrating our Club Excellence Awards were President-Elect Frank Yoke, Past President Scott Plakun, Past President and Past District Governor Peter Lagarias, President Bob Hermann, Dan Joraanstad, and Past President and Past District Governor Eric Schmautz.

Another proud moment for the Rotary Club of San Francisco came during the recognition of Arch Klumph Society donors in the District. An especially meaningful achievement for our Club was the leap over $3 million powered in part by the generosity of Club President Bob Hermann and Dan Joraanstad who had made a substantial gift. This enduring commitment to service and philanthropy sets a powerful example for all Rotarians.

Speakers at the Conference
  • The Keynote Speaker was Yinka Babalola, former Rotary International Vice President (2019-2020). He was selected by RI President Stephanie Urchick to attend our District Conference as her representative. Yinka offered powerful insights on the importance of membership and outreach. His message reinforced the value of expanding our reach and fostering diverse membership. Yinka was accompanied by his wife and fellow Rotarian Precy. Yinka and Precy worked shoulder to shoulder at the Conference service project. They and other Rotarians packaged 10,000 bags of oatmeal, sugar, and cinnamon for distribution locally to those in need.
  • One of the most moving moments came from speaker Victor Nunnemaker, who shared his transformative journey from a traumatic childhood to success, made possible by a Rotary scholarship. In gratitude, Victor has generously donated more than 16 scholarships to support Rotary Youth.
  • We also enjoyed the imaginative storytelling of Benjamin Clark, who guided us through the life of Charles Schulz, creator of the beloved Peanuts comic strip.
  • Elizabeth Mahoney captivated a packed, standing-room-only crowd with her insights into artificial intelligence and its use in Rotary.
  • Comedian Brian Copeland rounded out the weekend with humor and thought-provoking perspectives.
District Awards
The Conference also paid tribute to outstanding Rotarians whose dedication exemplifies the Rotary spirit.

  • Keith Axtell was honored with the Meritorious Service Award for his exceptional contributions.
  • Cyndy Simms received the Rotarian of the Year Award in recognition of her tireless commitment.
  • Jeff Lowenstein was celebrated with the prestigious Cliff Dochterman Award for his service to youth and scouting.
  • John Barrett received the Service Above Self Award for his unwavering dedication to community and service.
Truly awe-inspiring, these recognitions showcase the impact that individual commitment can have on both local and global scales.

The Best Part
But the best part of the Conference was as always the friendship and camaraderie with our fellow members, providing the basis of the enduring strength of our Rotary community. The stories shared and connections made over the weekend will undoubtedly inspire continued service and action within our clubs.
