At Rotary, we believe that creating a world where people come together and collaborate for a better future begins with embracing diversity in culture. In celebration of the Year of the Snake in the Chinese zodiac, this year's Lunar New Year event was organized by Hana Xu Wang and Dr. Stellie Kim at the Chinatown Restaurant in San Francisco.

The dinner event brought together members from the Rotary Club of Millbrae, the Rotary Club of San Francisco, the Rotary Club of San Francisco Chinatown, and the Rotary Club of San Francisco West. Our Club President Bob Hermann, dressed in a festive Chinese robe, welcomed everyone in Chinese by saying, Gung Hay Fat Choy, which means wishing you prosperity. RCSF Chinatown President Susan Dean also welcomed us and expressed delight that we celebrated at the restaurant where her club meets.

Stellie discussed the significance of the Lunar New Year and introduced customs from various countries in East and South Asia. Dora Dye, the Grindings editor, shared her childhood memories of the dinners served on New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, and the following day known as hoi nin. At this evening's dinner, members shared symbolic dishes, each rich with meaning, such as fish for abundance, dumplings for wealth, noodles for long life, and even some fruit for good luck which guests carried home.

The evening was an enchanting experience, especially when Hana who had prepared the beautiful red envelopes (a symbol of fortune in Chinese culture for each guest) introduced a fun, traditional game and led a sing-along of Gong Xi Gong Xi in Chinese and English. Everyone enjoyed the festivity and left full and happy. It was a beautiful celebration to welcome a new year that united our community.
