In recognition of March as Women’s History Month, our next DEI Film Festival movie is Miss Representation. This powerful documentary explores how mainstream media contributes to the under-representation of women in influential positions by circulating limited and often disparaging portrayals of women. Through personal stories of teenage girls and interviews with media insiders, journalists, educators, and activists, the film reveals how media messages shape confidence, ambition, and leadership opportunities for women and girls.
Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, Miss Representation offers a thoughtful look at the connection between media imagery and women’s participation in public life. The film highlights the urgent need for positive role models and calls attention to the media’s unique opportunity and responsibility to promote more accurate and empowering representations. It also launched a social action campaign encouraging policy change, educational reform, socially responsible business practices, and a public pledge against gender misrepresentation.
Popcorn and beverages (with and without alcohol) will be available during the screening of the film. We'll have a group discussion over dinner after the movie ends. This is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the themes of representation, leadership, and gender equity and to consider how each of us can help create a more inclusive media landscape.
Miss Representation is rated PG-14.
