The Rotary Club of San Francisco’s DEI Committee is pleased to announce the launch of our DEI Film Festival with the screening of Amistad at 4:30 PM on Sunday, July 16, 2023 in the Community Room at Rotary Terrace, 312 Miller Avenue, South San Francisco, CA 94080.
This film is based on true events starting in 1839, when a group of Africans overwhelmed the crew of the Amistad, a ship that was bringing them to slavery in the New World. The film focuses on the subsequent trial that went all the way to the US Supreme Court: Were they guilty of murder? Were they slaves or were they free citizens of a foreign country?
Directed by Steven Spielberg, Amistad features Djimon Hounsou, Matthew McConaughey, Anthony Hopkins (nominated for an Oscar as Best Actor in a Supporting Role), and Morgan Freeman. It was released in 1997 with an R rating (some scenes of strong brutal violence and some related nudity).
All Club members, prospective members, their friends, and family are invited to attend. Tickets are $10 per person and include the movie and refreshments.
Parking: There is a parking garage located across from Rotary Terrace. Additionally, street parking is available free of charge on Sundays. However, please refrain from parking in the Rotary Terrace garage if the door is open, as it is exclusively reserved for their residents.
We plan to show a different film on the third Sunday of every other month. Watch for an announcement soon of our September 17 program.
