Amistad movie imageThe Rotary Club of San Francisco’s DEI Committee is pleased to announce the launch of our DEI Film Festival with the screening of Amistad at 4:30 PM on Sunday, July 16, 2023 in the Community Room at Rotary Terrace, 312 Miller Avenue, South San Francisco, CA 94080.

This film is based on true events starting in 1839, when a group of Africans overwhelmed the crew of the Amistad, a ship that was bringing them to slavery in the New World. The film focuses on the subsequent trial that went all the way to the US Supreme Court: Were they guilty of murder? Were they slaves or were they free citizens of a foreign country?

Directed by Steven Spielberg, Amistad features Djimon Hounsou, Matthew McConaughey, Anthony Hopkins (nominated for an Oscar as Best Actor in a Supporting Role), and Morgan Freeman. It was released in 1997 with an R rating (some scenes of strong brutal violence and some related nudity).

All Club members, prospective members, their friends, and family are invited to attend. Tickets are $10 per person and include the movie and refreshments.
