Life, AnimatedOur September DEI Film Festival movie is Life, Animated. This powerful documentary tells the story of Owen Suskind, who was diagnosed with autism at the age of three. As Owen withdrew into silence, his parents feared they might never connect with him again — until they discovered that Disney-animated films offered a surprising way back. Through Disney’s beloved characters and stories, Owen learned how to make sense of the world and found his own voice. Life, Animated is a heartfelt exploration of communication, family bonds, and the power of storytelling.

Life, Animated won the Sundance Film Festival award for Best Direction, the Special Achievement Annie Award, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

Please note that the film is recommended for ages 12 and up.

Following the screening, we will host a group discussion over a pizza and salad dinner to reflect on the film’s themes and to share perspectives on how storytelling can create understanding and connection across all abilities.

This event is sponsored by the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committees of the Rotary Club of San Francisco and of Rotary District 5150.

Sign up now! Registration is available through September 11. The ticket price of $20 includes the film, snacks, beverages, pizza, and a discussion after the film. All are welcome to attend this inspiring and thought-provoking evening of film and conversation.
