Our November DEI Film Festival movie is Mankiller. This inspiring documentary follows the life of Wilma Mankiller, the first woman to be elected Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. The film traces her journey from her childhood in Oklahoma, through her family’s relocation to San Francisco, and back to Oklahoma, where she rose to power within the Cherokee Nation.
Through original interviews with friends, family, and activists, including Gloria Steinem, as well as archival footage, Mankiller portrays a visionary leader who overcame deep-rooted sexism to usher in an era of stability and prosperity for her people.
Mankiller has been recognized at several film festivals, earning multiple awards for its storytelling and impact.
Following the screening, we will host a group discussion over a pizza and salad dinner to reflect on the film’s themes and to share perspectives on Wilma Mankiller’s legacy as a leader, activist, and changemaker.
This event is sponsored by the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committees of the Rotary Club of San Francisco and of District 5150.
Sign up now! Registration is available through November 13. The ticket price of $20 includes the film, snacks, beverages, pizza, and a discussion after the film. All are welcome to attend this inspiring and thought-provoking evening of film and conversation.
