Join us for an afternoon celebrating Turkish culture, history, and food. The name of this country is in the process of being changed to Türkiye.
We’ll start by looking through the lens of the movie My Grandfather's People. This heartfelt film explores family, acceptance, and the journey of a 10-year-old boy in a small Turkish town. It's a story that speaks to everyone about embracing differences, understanding our roots, and celebrating the richness of Turkish life by exploring the diversity within Turkish heritage.
The movie is based on the family history of the director, Çagan Irmak, one of the most powerful directors of Turkish cinema. His grandfather was one of millions of people forced to migrate between Greece and Turkey at the end of the First World War because of their religious identities.
After the film, we’ll discuss our reactions to it over a sumptuous Turkish dinner catered by Troya Mediterranean Kitchen, an excellent Turkish restaurant in San Francisco. The buffet-style dinner will feature a variety of traditional Turkish foods, including options appropriate for vegetarians, vegans, and those who avoid gluten. The dinner will be accompanied by traditional Turkish alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages – all included with your registration.
My Grandfather’s People is in Turkish with English subtitles. Rated “13+”, it is two hours long.
This event is sponsored by the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee of the Rotary Club of San Francisco.
Sign up now! Space is limited and registration is available through January 17. The ticket price of $40 includes the film, dinner, and beverages.
