ROTARY LUNCHEON: Dixie James

From birth, Holly James had to fight to live. Not only was Holly born with Down syndrome, but she was also born with heart disease. Holly's mother, Dixie James, joins us today to share her journey and challenges in raising Holly from birth to adulthood and from dependence to being able to live independently.

Dixie James is a retired Special Education teacher, having taught for Marin County Office of Education for 25 years. She has a Master’s degree in Exceptional Student Education, motivated by giving birth to her daughter, Holly. Dixie coached Special Olympics for 12 years as well as health and fitness classes for adults with special needs; she also composed an album of educational songs, titled The Singing Calendar that was a top seller for 25 years.

Dixie's favorite phrase is LIFE IS MOVEMENT and practices this phrase daily, working out at Fitness SF, open water swimming, tap dancing, race walking, English Horse Riding, yoga, piano and weight training, which qualified her for TEAM USA in 2007, to compete in Greece, becoming an international champion in her age division in Ms. Physique and Ms. Sport Model.
