Club Member Heidi Thomas Kühn paid tribute to Memorial Day which fell on Monday, May 27 this year:
"In tribute to Memorial Day, we honor American veterans who died while serving in the U.S. military armed forces — a tradition which began in 1868 — as many American soldiers have tragically lost life and limb to landmines.
Yet, few realize the world’s first widespread deployment of landmines took place during the Civil War (1860-1865). According to Dr. Ken Rutherford, landmine survivor who wrote the Forward to my book Breaking Ground, landmines were first used during the start of the war, when the disparity in manpower, material, and weaponry between the North and South was significant. The gap widened in the Union’s favor as the war progressed, forcing the Confederate war industry to innovate and improvise. As the conflict progressed, landmine warfare advanced commensurably, and both tactics and technology evolved to include innovative types of design and deployment.
The Rotary Club of San Francisco Board of Directors met on April 23, 2024 via Zoom. President Sunny Singh called the meeting to order at 4:03 p.m. Nancy Graydon, Secretary, recorded the minutes.
In attendance were Emily Borland, Dan Davies, Nancy Graydon, President-Elect Bob Hermann, Scott Plakun, President Sunny Singh, Todd St Vrain, Christopher Wiseman, Ozan Yasavur, and Frank Yoke, constituting a quorum. Absent were Margaret Miley, Maureen O’Shea, Alex Omoko, and Bill Poppen. Today’s guest was Mary Liu.

The Board reviewed and approved the March 25, 2024 minutes.
Our Annual District Conference this year was a Multi-District Conference consisting of Districts 5150, 5180, and 5190. The theme was "Better Together", and it was better together!
The Conference kicked off on late Friday, May 17, 2024 with registration. Dora Dye was the registrar for District 5150 and had the pleasure of working with the registrars from the other two Districts. The three of us had spent almost a year together to produce all of the pieces to make registration seamless.

In honor of Pride Month, the Rotary Club of San Francisco proudly welcomes San Francisco’s first ever Drag Laureate — D’Arcy Drollinger! Come to learn about this position, which the City says is the first in the U.S., to bring visibility to the LGBTQ community and to work with City agencies to address LGBTQ people’s needs.
Join us at one or both of the Baby Showers at the Homeless Prenatal Program where we will give expectant mothers diaper bags filled with supplies. The party for Spanish speakers starts at 10 AM; the party for English speakers starts at 1 PM. Registration is limited to two Rotarians at each shower.
Park Superintendent and Rotarian David Smith will lead a discussion on America's most popular National Park site - Golden Gate National Recreation Area. He will also share the ongoing challenges with climate change, crime, and reaching new audiences.
Join us to show President Sunny our appreciation for his leadership throughout this Rotary year. We will congratulate our new members, and salute the many fine accomplishments of the Club this year. All members, guests, and their families are welcome.
It's time to thank President Sunny for a job well done at this traditional luncheon. Come and find out what President-Elect Nominee Frank Yoke has planned to help us forever remember President Sunny as we say THANK YOU at the last Luncheon Meeting of President Sunny's year as Club President. Prior to this meeting at 11:30 AM, the Rotary Club of San Francisco will conduct a wine auction to benefit the programs and projects of our Club. The auction will take place in the lobby outside our meeting room.
Calling Rotarians to chaperone kids on a field trip by bus to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The field trip is all day. Admission into the Aquarium and transportation will be provided.
In honor of the Independence Day holiday, there is no Rotary Luncheon on July 2, 2024. Our first meeting for the Rotary Year 2024-2025 will be held on Tuesday, July 9, 2024.
