In October 2026, the Rotary Club of San Francisco’s Anti-Human Trafficking Committee met with representatives of San Francisco SafeHouse to learn about the intersection of human trafficking, homelessness, and the need for safe housing for women and children in our community. One important takeaway stood out: escaping exploitation is only the first step. Survivors also need stable housing, healthcare, employment opportunities, and a supportive community to rebuild their lives.
Human trafficking, particularly sex trafficking, remains a serious and often underreported issue in San Francisco and throughout the Bay Area. Survivors often face overlapping challenges, including homelessness, domestic violence, poverty, and limited access to safe shelter. According to SafeHouse, approximately 3,000 women experience homelessness in San Francisco, yet fewer than 4% of the City’s shelter beds are designated specifically for women. For those who fear assault or retraumatization in co-ed settings, the lack of appropriate shelter can mean choosing between remaining in a dangerous situation and sleeping on the street.
On Saturday, October 17, 2026, about 18 Rotarians and guests enjoyed a morning of discovery at the San Francisco Zen Center's City Center, a Soto Zen Buddhist temple. We began with a friendly introduction to Buddhism and its traditions, followed by a Dharma Talk — a Buddhist teacher sharing thoughts on everyday life, its challenges, and how we might approach them with greater awareness and compassion. For many of us, it was our first experience with Zen Buddhism, and there was plenty to learn, reflect on, and talk about afterward.

It's time for one of our most popular service projects — Thanksgiving at The Arc San Francisco! In the spirit of giving thanks, Rotarians will gather to provide a Thanksgiving feast for participants at The Arc SF. Many hands are needed to either prep, serve, or be on the clean-up team; please sign up to help. This is the only Thanksgiving celebration for many of the people we serve that day. And they are most appreciative.
