What's New in the Rotary Club of San Francisco!
Emergency Services Day, our Club's signature event, will be held in Fall 2024. We will send out more details as we approach the date.
 
In addition to the events listed on www.sfrotary.org, please check our Club Calendar for Committee meetings and other activities to come. Many of our Committees are looking for additional members. 
Kwanzaa Celebration
Dan Joraanstad and Maurice RiversA dozen Rotarians participated in a Kwanzaa celebration on December 29 at an annual community event sponsored by the OMI Cultural Participation Project and organized by the Executive Director of OMI-CPP, Club member Maurice Rivers.
 
We learned that Kwanzaa is an African-American holiday based on traditional harvest festivals held in Africa. It is focused on teaching children important values while giving respect to ancestors. Each of the seven days of the Kwanzaa holiday focuses on a different principle, identified in Swahili:
 
  1. Umoja - Unity
  2. Kujichagulia - Self-Determination
  3. Ujima - Collective Work and Responsibility
  4. Ujamaa - Cooperative Economics
  5. Nia - Purpose
  6. Kuumba - Creativity
  7. Imani – Faith

ROTARY LUNCHEON January 16, 2024: Shirmila Cooray and De Marillac Academy
Shirmila Cooray will share the mission of De Marillac Academy, a tuition-free Catholic academy in the Tenderloin serving 4th through 8th graders and continuing support as these students advance into high school and early adulthood.
 
Basic PRLS Training: January 20, 2024
Calling all Rotary leaders and potential Rotary leaders! District 5150 presents its Basic Potential Rotary Leaders Seminars (PRLS), the first course in a series of courses designed by Rotarians to teach Rotarians skills and techniques as they prepare to assume leadership roles in their Rotary clubs. The training is in person. Our Club will reimburse a member for the cost to attend after that member has completed the course.
 
DEI EVENT AND DINNER January 21, 2024: Turkish Film and Dinner
Join us for an afternoon celebrating Turkish culture, history, and food. The name of this country is in the process of being changed to Türkiye. We'll watch the movie My Grandfather's People. After the film, we'll discuss our reactions over a buffet-style Turkish dinner. All Rotarians in District 5150, our families, and our friends are invited and welcome.
 
ROTARY LUNCHEON January 23, 2024: District Governor Laine Hendricks
District Governor Laine Hendricks will talk about how this year's Rotary International theme, Create Hope in the World, impacts our District and our Club.
 
Welcome to the Club for New and Prospective Members: January 30, 2024

This meet-and-greet is an opportunity for new and prospective members to get better acquainted with each other as well as with a few Club leaders and longer-term members. Hear of service opportunities in our community. Network with leaders in the business community. Learn about Rotary. Light food and refreshments will be provided. Everyone including guests must register.

ROTARY LUNCHEON February 6, 2024: John Rothmann and Politics in 2024
KGO 810 radio talk show host and political commentator John Rothmann, one of our most popular speakers, will discuss his thoughts about current political events in 2023. John always welcomes our questions. 
 
 
 
SERVICE PROJECT February 16, 2024: Catholic Charities - St. Joseph's Family Center Garden Project
Join us to help beautify the garden at St. Joseph’s Family Center. Volunteers will be weeding, planting, installing a bench, and using their creativity to make the garden a more beautiful place for the families at the Center.
