On June 16, 2025, our Vocational Services team gathered at Total Wine for a memorable evening of wine tasting, networking, and engaging conversation. The tasting featured a selection of eight wines from California wine regions and American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). We learned that AVAs are regions defined by unique geography and climate, influencing the types of grapes grown. Foggy areas are perfect for specific varietals while hotter climates produce different wines.
Total Wine's Expert, Edgar, guided us through the tasting process, teaching us how to evaluate wine using sight, smell, a swirl of the glass, and a sip. While sipping wine samples, we enjoyed a light dinner of sandwiches and salads. The evening also offered an opportunity to share career advancement strategies such as leveraging LinkedIn, using referrals, and networking via business cards. The lively discussions provided valuable insights into career growth and success.
President Bob Hermann, Jr. (Information Technology: Administration | Retired) began this evening's meeting with the presentation of a Paul Harris Fellowship.
New Paul Harris Fellow
Paul Harris (1868-1947) founded the first Rotary Club in Chicago in 1905, hoping to bring some of what he treasured from his rural Vermont upbringing to the big city. Rotary would not exist without his vision of a group of business professionals who helped each other by helping others. For each $1,000 donated to The Rotary Foundation, a person can become a Paul Harris Fellow. Our Club was proud to award a Paul Harris Fellowship to Scott Morton, the owner of MoMo's, for providing the space and hospitality in his restaurant for our evening meetings for the 2024-2025 Rotary year. Scott thanked our Club for the PHF and for our graciousness and respect toward his staff.
Club Members La Carre Ivy, Eric Orantes, and Kayla Trunecek volunteered at the morning baby shower for Spanish speakers at the Homeless Prenatal Program (HPP) on June 18, 2025. Joining them was Eric's wife, Odilie.
Club Members Robin Azevedo and Carrie Schucker volunteered at the afternoon baby shower for English speakers that same day to celebrate six expectant mothers. Joining Robin and Carrie were a photographer and reporter from The Standard, two doulas, and two high school students from Urban High School who have been doing community service at HPP this past semester.
Activities included raffle prizes, games, reading of letters from the moms to their soon-to-be born babies, and brunch for the morning shower or lunch for the afternoon shower.
Join us to build grocery boxes for seniors, sort donations, and perform other various tasks as needed. The Food Bank continues to need your helping hands. Registration is limited to 9 volunteers; so register early!

At the same meeting, we are honored that 2025-2026 District 5150 Governor Mitone Griffiths will visit our Club to induct our new President and Board members and to share her theme, Every Piece Matters, and her vision for the new Rotary year.

District 5150 presents its Introductory Potential Rotary Leaders Seminars (PRLS), the first course in a series of courses designed by Rotarians to teach Rotarians skills and techniques as they prepare to assume leadership roles in their Rotary clubs. The training is in person. Our Club will reimburse a member for the cost to attend after that member has completed the course. July 19, 2025 is the last time that this course will be offered; don't miss out on this opportunity.
