On June 30, 2023, the last day of the 2022-2023 Rotary year, members of our Club gathered at Nopalito to celebrate with tequila, mezcal, or any drink of their choice. Our Club provided the Happy Hour bites, and a good time was had by all.
Present were Dan Davies and his guest, Social Chair Alisha Marfatia who organized this event, Anita Stangl, Maureen O'Shea, Lisa Stark, Ann Daugherty, Bill Gregory, Margaret Miley, Ozan Yasavur, and Merve Yasavur.
As members of the Rotary Club of San Francisco, we are also members of Rotary District 5150. This year's District Governor is our own Club Member, Laine Hendricks. Her theme for this Rotary year is Connect.

In attendance were President Christopher, Gary Dales, Frank Yoke, Maureen O’Shea, Emily Borland, Lisa Christian, Mary Liu, Sunny Singh, Margaret Miley, Wendy Shew, Scott Plakun, Brian Lan, and Stacey Poole, constituting a quorum. Absent was Jeff Lerner. The invited guests were JT Forbus, Carlos Valdes, Nancy Graydon, and Luis Moran.
Two to three volunteers are needed early on the morning of Monday, July 31, 2023 from approximately 6:30 AM to 7:30 AM to help check in 60 students heading from San Francisco to the RYLA camp.
Two to three volunteers are also needed to supervise the pick-up of the campers when the bus returns on Friday, August 4, 2023 estimated at 5:30 PM and staying until the last camper is picked up around 6 PM.
The pick-up and drop-off location is the Academy of Art University, 601 Brannan Street, San Francisco, CA 94107. Please contact Kristine Baltasar to volunteer and let her know which day(s) you can help.
In the first meeting of our Club's 2023-2024 year, incoming Club President Sunny Singh will introduce this year's Rotary International theme, Create Hope in the World, and what it means for our Club. President Sunny and the New Board will also share their plans for the new Rotary year.
Our Club’s DEI Committee is pleased to announce the launch of our DEI Film Festival with the screening of Amistad. This film is rated R and based on true events starting in 1839, when a group of Africans overwhelmed the crew of the Amistad, a ship that was bringing them to slavery in the New World. The film focuses on the subsequent trial that went all the way to the US Supreme Court. This event is open to all Club members, prospective members, their friends, and family.
SFJAZZ explores the full spectrum of jazz from its origins to its diverse and evolving expressions around the world today. Mark Malaspina of SFJAZZ joins us to share their mission and vision. He will be joined by a group of student musicians who will perform a few select pieces of jazz.
Come and join your fellow Rotarians for live music, stunning water views, and drinks and bites at the historic Pier 23 Cafe, Restaurant, & Bar! Happy hour bites will be provided, and there will be a full, no host bar. This event is open to all Rotarians, their families, and guests (including prospective members). Attendance is capped at 20 people, so register early!
California State Senator Scott Wiener will give an overview on the legislation and the priorities he has planned for the 2023 legislative cycle. In the Senate, Senator Wiener works to make housing more abundant and affordable, invest in our transportation systems, increase access to healthcare, meaningfully address climate change and the impacts of wildfires, reform our criminal justice system, reduce gun violence, reduce California’s high poverty rate, and safeguard and expand the rights of all communities, including immigrants and the LGBTQ community.
JoEllen Arntz, Company Manager and Wardrobe Supervisor of the SMUIN Contemporary Ballet, will present a very unique view of the Ballet World that is sure to please both adults and children. She will bring authentic SMUIN ballet costumes for the audience to view. Members and guests are encouraged to bring their children and grandchildren to this luncheon who will be allowed to come to the front of the room to view the costumes closely and see how they are made.
